Glitched Home
Glitched Home was a site-specific installation that took place in the summer of 2021 at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas.
*In her work, Fayetteville-based artist Ziba Rajabi confronts the many effects of displacement from her home country of Iran. Rajabi struggles to maintain a sense of "home" in two very different places.
Drawing directly from memory, Glitched Home considers Rajabi's fleeting remembrances of her home in Tehran. The artist brings together a selection of images and materials that evoke the in-between moments she has experienced while being away. The space mimics that of a home and includes everyday objects, wallpapers, and rugs from Iran. Rajabi will work periodically in this space throughout the course of this exhibition as she creates Glitched Home. Come again to see how Rajabi develops her artwork this summer!*
*Excerpt from the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art statement.
This installation is made of over 2500 pieces of painted canvases stitched together with dyed cotton threads. These square tiles symbolize pixels on digital devices. Over the past few years, due to the complexities of the bureaucracy of immigration and the Political climate after the Trump administration, I have lived away from my family and loved ones in Iran. Therefore, my only means of communication with them has been through messaging and video calls, which means I have only seen them on the screen of digital devices. After a while, their three-dimensional being became a two-dimensional experience on the screen for me. This flat two-dimensional home interior, incorporating architectural features and furniture, such as windows, doors, and a Persian rug, represents my experience of home living abroad.
The completion of this site-specific installation took place over six weeks in the museum before the eyes of the viewers to provide an opportunity for the community to connect with local artists and learn more about their stories.
